    Description

Delightful Bennington glazed Toby jug. A impressively corpulent Toby with some variation in brown color shades, shown sitting and holding a rope. Perfect for a Sailor or Navy man. Excellent condition.
Toby jug is the name of a very special form of pitcher. It is shaped like the full figure of a man or woman. A pitcher that shows just the top half of a person is not correctly called a toby. It is sometimes called a character jug. The Toby Jug was named for Toby Philpot, an infamous drinker mentioned in a British song written in 1761. More examples of toby jugs can be found under Royal Doulton and other factory names. Vintage Bennington Toby Jug T-1,
This rare toby jug comes from the Bennington Pottery Collection. He is a seaman holding a rope wearing a round brimmed hat. His shirt is striped and wearing a seaman's overcoat.
    The piece has excellent luster.
The piece is marked at the bottom with T-1.
There is a tick mark on the top rim of the hat which is from the original production as it was glazed over at the factory at firing. There is a line under tick but is NOT A CRACK THRUThe mug. It is as made. See pictures.
