Yixing teapots and cups, saucers and plates are all hand-made rather than being thrown on the wheel. The hard clay is pounded with a heavy wooden mallet into a slab.  A yixing teapot is a specialty tea vessel made for brewing tea. This teapot is typically made of unglazed clay and features an unassuming structure. The teapots are made from clay found near Yixing in the Jiangsu province of China.
Made of simple unglazed clay, a pot with a simple profile could hide unnoticed in a cabinet full of hand painted porcelain or gold gilded china. In the right hands, however, the yixing clay tea pot becomes one of our most beloved of tea tools.
The Yixing teapot is free of lead, arsenic, cadmium, and other toxic materials. Because of the unique properties of the Yixing clays, Yixing ware is unlike other unglazed earthenware teapots.
